Team Building at Urban Friction

At Beso Media, we strongly believe in working as a team and helping one another deliver the best work we are capable of delivering. For this reason, it is very important that we know how to work efficiently and smoothly as a team, and the only way to ensure this is by partaking in activities that help us learn how to work together.

Rock Climbing

On Friday, the 3rd of May, we had our first team building activity for the year and it was an experience and a half. We did something that was new to everyone on the team, and that was rock climbing. Considering that none of us had gone rock climbing before, we were all quite hesitant, and maybe even a little scared, at the beginning of the activity. However, by the end of the day, we were all fairly confident rock climbers, all thanks to our amazing instructors, and the support of our colleagues.

The day started off with the team saying something about themselves, that nobody else in the team knows about them. This was an exercise to help us get to know our colleagues a little bit better.

It was then followed by a safety talk from our instructors. Once this was complete and we had all our climbing gear on, we got to climbing! All of us got a chance to go up the wall once, or even twice, for those who enjoyed the climb enough.

Blindfolded Rock Climbing

We then moved on to an activity that was done in pairs. The instructor asked us to pick the person we work closest with in the office and pair up. In our pairs, we had to do blind folded rock climbing. This entailed one of the people in the pair being blindfolded, and the other person acting as their eyes to help them navigate up the wall. This showed us a lot on how we communicate with each other, and how well we follow instructions. It was truly an eye opening activity.

Belaying The Team

Our final activity of the day was learning how to belay. This is when you control the rope that is tied to the person who is rock climbing. We all got a chance to learn how to attach all the equipment safely, and then we were taught how to safely belay people. We did this using weights, and once we got the hang of it, we were allowed to practice belaying on our colleagues.

We ended off the day by sharing a meal together and debriefing on how we felt about the overall team building activity. We concluded that although rock climbing might not be for all of us, we are definitely glad that we got to experience this as team.

We would like to extend our utmost gratitude to the Urban Friction team for hosting us, educating us on rock climbing, and keeping us safe throughout the entirety of our team building activity.
